Advancing Tobacco Control in four Districts of Maharashtra through Capacity Building, Training, Engagement and Advocacy
The project is in collaboration with ‘International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union)’ for two years starting from January 2011.

Objectives of the project
• Create smoke free public places as per section 4 of COTPA and strengthen enforcement and implementation of section-6 of COTPA.
• Improved monitoring and compliance of Tobacco Control Laws.
Methods: Building capacity of decision makers at the State and District level to institutionalize tobacco control within jurisdictions and building capacity of civil society partners at District level.

Project Progress
Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs) for each district was identified to act as nodal liaison for advancing tobacco control in the district: Matrathwada Gramin Vikas Sanstha (MGVS) Aurangabad, Nisarg Vidnyan Nagpur, ABM Samaj probodhan sanstha, Thane and Sadhana Institute for Sustainable Development, Pune joined the project before 30th April 2011. A capacity building programme was organized for the participating NGOs. The Project Director and the Project Coordinator had meetings with the commissioner, FDA Maharashtra and the Jt. Commissioner, FDA and The State Nodal Officer under Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act-2003 to sensitize them to tobacco control issues.
As a consequence of these meeting a circular was issued by the State Nodal Officer to concerned Assistant commissioners, FDA for supporting the project.
