Sensitization Workshop for Police Officials

As a part of its effort towards generating greater awareness about tobacco control law and their implementation, Healis- Sekhsaria Institute for Public Health with the help of Police department conducted several sensitization workshops for police officials considering the fact that police personnel are very much involved in usage of tobacco products.

Objectives of the workshop:

• Creating awareness about the need and the rationale for Tobacco Control Law, International and National legal obligation • To make them aware of provisions of tobacco laws and their role under the same.

• Brainstorming and identifying the obstacles in law implementation and their possible solutions.

• To explore and identify the means by which Healis can support and coordinate this activity post workshop.

The workshop was addressed by:

• Dr. (Mrs.) Gauarvi Mishra, Assistant Professor and Assistant Physician, department of Preventive Oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital.

• Ms. Amruta Majalkara, Research Associate, Healis.

• Ms. Pallavi Girje, Project Facilitator, Salaam Bombay Foundation.

• Mr. Krushna Maitekar, Food Inspector, Food and Drug Administration, Headquarters.

Way Forward:

A good response was received from the police officials during the whole process of organization of five workshops. The enthusiasm of knowing more about the law and its implementation could evidently be noticed not only among the participants but also in senior official at the Mumbai Police Headquarter. Consequently, Commissioner of Police, Mumbai has shown a keen interest in conducting more sensitization workshops for higher police personnel.
