National Level Media Workshop on Current issues in Tobacco Control

The sole objective of The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, is to improve public health by discouraging tobacco consumption. Therefore it is imperative that media persons understand the background as well as provisions under the Act and its various notifications. As a part of its effort towards generating greater awareness about tobacco control law and their implementation; Healis – Sekhsaria organized one day National Level Media Workshop.

The main focus of workshop was on the following issues:

• WHO – Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

• Current trends on implementation of tobacco law

• Interference of Tobacco Company in dilution of law

• Prohibition on Tobacco Advertising, Promotion and Sponsorship

The workshop was addressed by:

Aims and Objectives:

• To sensitize media to current issues in tobacco control.

• To highlight activities being conducted by tobacco companies for surrogate promotion of the brands.

• To highlight legal and financial implications of activities being undertaken by tobacco companies.
